Foot Patrol Incident - Swan Rescue |
||
|
Dear Beam Park Whilst on foot patrol today, we were approached by a member of the public who reported a cygnet swan sitting beside a busy road. Upon arrival, I located the swan and, concerned for its welfare and the risk of it entering the carriageway, carefully approached and picked it up. I then moved the swan to a place of safety away from the road whilst my colleague contacted South Essex Wildlife Hospital. A representative from South Essex Wildlife attended shortly afterwards and took custody of the cygnet to ensure it received the appropriate care and assessment. At this age, cygnets can sometimes become separated from their parents, particularly as adult swans begin preparing for the next breeding season and may move juveniles on from their territory. However, due to the immediate risk posed by the busy road, we were not prepared to leave the swan in danger and took appropriate action to safeguard it. This incident is a reminder that no two days are ever the same in neighbourhood policing. Whilst out on patrol, we never know what we are going to come across. One moment we may be dealing with community concerns and the next helping a vulnerable animals in need. Thankfully, the cygnet was safely recovered and placed into the care of wildlife professionals. 🦢🚔
